چکیده

Pearson’s correlation coefficient is used to describe dependence between random variables X and Y . In some practical situations, however, we have strong correlation for some values X and/or Y and no correlation for other values ofX and Y . To describe such a local dependence, we come up with a natural localized version of Pearson’s correlation coefficient. We also study the properties of the newly defined localized coefficient. 1 Formulation of the Problem Pearson’s correlation coefficient: reminder. To describe relation between two random variables X and Y , Pearson’s correlation coefficient r is often used. This coefficient is defined as r[X,Y ] def = C[X,Y ] σ[X] · σ(Y ) , (1)

COMPARISON OF VALUES OF PEARSON’S AND SPEARMAN’S CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS ON THE SAME SETS OF DATA jan hauke, tomasz kossowski

Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient is a nonparametric (distribution-free) rank statistic proposed by Charles Spearman as a measure of the strength of an association between two variables. It is a measure of a monotone association that is used when the distribution of data makes Pearson’s correlation coefficient undesirable or misleading. Spearman’s coefficient is not a measure of the linea...

Pearson’s coefficient between intuitionistic fuzzy sets

The correlation coefficient (Pearson’s r) is one of the most frequently used tools in statistics. In this paper we discuss a correlation coefficient between Atanassov’s intuitionistic fuzzy sets (A-IFSs). We have constructed the coefficient so it provides the strength of the relationship between A-IFSs and also shows if the considered sets are positively or negatively correlated. Next, the prop...

If both height and weight are normally distributed, we use the Pearson’s correlation; otherwise Spearman’s correlation coefficient will be presented. Spearman’s correlation is also applicable for two categorical ordinal variables like pain intensity (no, mild, moderate, severe) with burn-surface-area (< 10%, 10% 19%, 20% 29%, ≥ 30%). Table I shows the correlation coefficient between height and ...

Forecasting Equity Market Correlation: A Comparison of Alternative Measures

This paper provides empirical evidence to compare the abilities of the forecasting correlations among market returns. The conditional models, which are based on the estimation of the time-varying correlation equations, provide strong forecast accuracy. The unconditional measures of correlation, however, perform poorly in all equity markets. The popular Pearson’s correlation coefficient is infer...
